The goal of the Libro de buen amor / Book of Good Love Online Project is to make the fourteenth-century book of the Archpriest available and teachable in both Spanish and English for many different types of readers, including those new to medieval Spanish literature. Our edition of the Libro de buen Amor is based on Manuscript S from the University of Salamanca and is presented with accompanying images of the manuscript pages. Our translation follows the Spanish text line by line to facilitate reading along with the edited Spanish text or the manuscript text. The Libro de buen amor / Book of Good Love Online Project team openly acknowledges that all editions are interpretations. The editorial decisions regarding abbreviations, spelling, regularization, word separation, punctuation and the like were made in the spirit of producing a text that is legible and teachible, and that also maintains its relationship to the material text that appears in Manuscript S.

Word separation, accentuation, and punctuation follow modern usage with the exception of contractions of pronouns and prepositional phrases, such as d’ellas, d’estos, and qu’el. For example dixol is rendered dixo’l instead of “le dixo”.

Abbreviations are expanded, for example nõ becomes non. We retain much of the medieval orthography, following the manuscript's usage of a, ç, e, o, d, f, h, b, g, t, x, th, q, r, and rr.

The letters u and v and i, j, and y have been regularized based on their vocalic and consonantal values.

The tironian symbol, e, and et, are all used in the manuscript. We use the Spanish y throughout.

A note on stanza numbering: We follow the numbering that has become standard in Libro de buen amor studies. This has the advantage of facilitating comparative readings with other editions and also shows readers where Manuscript S departs from the other witnesses.
